Brinjal’s in the Curry
This delicious recipe tastes lovely with a side of steamed rice.

  1. Soak the ball of tamarind in warm water.
  2. Discard the pulp and reserve the juice.
  3. In a pressure cooker, cook the thur dal.
  4. Heat the oil in a pan and fry the mustard seeds.
  5. Add the dals and fry until they turn red.
  6. Add the coconut and hing and fry until the coconut turns red.
  7. Keep this mixture aside.
  8. Cook the chopped brinjal in a little water.
  9. Once the brinjal softens slightly, add the tamarind extract, salt, turmeric and sambar powder.
  10. Stir well.
  11. Bring the mixture to a boil and then stir in the thur dal.
  12. Dilute the rice flour in a little water and then pour it into the brinjal.
  13. Allow the mixture to boil for a minute or two, and then mix in the coconut and dal seasoning.
  14. Remove the kottu from the flame and serve!
