Barnyard Millet Porridge
This simple to make samvat rice recipe is wholesome and filling.

  1. Soak the sama chawal for one hour.
  2. After an hour drain the chawal and keep aside.
  3. In a pan heat the ghee, and add the cumin seeds.
  4. Fry the cumin seeds for half a minute.
  5. Add the ginger green chili paste and the black pepper.
  6. Sauté for a minute.
  7. Add the potato cubes and sauté for two minutes.
  8. Add the drained chawal and sauté for another minute.
  9. Pour in the water and stir.
  10. Add the salt and stir.
  11. Cover the pan and allow the chawal to cook on a low flame. Stir occasionally.
  12. Once the chawal softens, remove it from the flame and mix in the coriander leaves.
  13. Top the chawal with ghee and serve.
Recipe Notes

This recipe yields a slightly mushy rice. If you’d prefer the rice to remain in individual grains, add only 1 ½ cups of water while cooking it.
