Vanilla Cakes Recipe
In Leigh Bardugo’s popular fantasy novel, Six of Crows, we’re introduced to one of the main characters – Nina – when she’s eating vanilla cakes. Nina’s one of our favourite characters, so here’s a recipe for those vanilla cakes.

  1. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F. Butter two 9 inch cake pans and line parchment paper.
  2. Dust the pans with flour.
  3. Whisk the flour, baking powder and salt together.
  4. Beat the butter and sugar together for three minutes.
  5. Gently beat in the eggs, one by one.
  6. Beat in the vanilla and then the flour mixture and milk.
  7. Pour the batter into the pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  8. Allow to cool on a rack for ten minutes.
  9. Serve.
