FLEA Bazaar Cafe Launches The Cameo Kitchen: The First Edition Offers a Taste of Nagaland with Meiphung Oriental
FLEA Bazaar Cafe is a marketplace for food discovery with over a dozen restaurants spanning cuisines and a community bar by Social. With 14 brands catering everything from sushi burritos to Lucknowi kebabs, the cafe caters to every kind of food enthusiast.
As the gateway to the hidden gems in the world of food, FLEA Bazaar Cafe has now launched The Cameo Kitchen, which will take culinary exploration a step further. Through The Cameo Kitchen, FLEA will collaborate with chefs and restaurants from across India and the world to cater curated menus, immersive experiences, and dishes and drinks that don’t usually get the attention they deserve.
The first restaurant to feature at The Cameo Kitchen is Meiphung Oriental, a rustic Naga kitchen from Goa helmed by Chef Livingstone Shaiza. Naga food remains relatively under-explored in Mumbai and through Meiphung Oriental, the cafe hopes to showcase the delicious nuances of its cuisine over the month.
“FLEA Bazaar Cafe is our ode to food markets around the world, which allow you to experience new and interesting cuisines. While we have succeeded in giving a home to some great home-grown restaurants from the city, with the launch of The Cameo Kitchen, our aim is to give home-grown chefs from around the country a space to showcase authentic cooking from their native lands. Our diners have always appreciated diversity in food and culture, and Meiphung Oriental will certainly give them punchy spices, earthy umami flavours and fresh and zingy curries to feast on. We’re excited to take your taste buds on a culinary tour of Nagaland” says Riyaaz Amlani, MD & CEO of Impresario Handmade Restaurants.
For those who are new to Naga delights, Meiphung Oriental has some standout dishes you must try: delicious appetisers include Smoked Tenderloin Salad made with shredded house smoked jerky with pounded long beans, mint, saw tooth coriander, and ghost chilli, the house favourite Crispy Aubergine stir-fried with garlic chives, spring onion, and burnt green chillies, and Stir Fried Pork tossed with Livingstone’s home brewed king chilli sauce, basil, and onions. Also worth noting is the Naga Dal with basil, chicken, and bamboo shoot, Potato with Wild Mushroom in a spicy aromatic broth cooked with garlic chives and foraged mushrooms called Langphong, Meiphung’s Famous Pork Curry or the Smoked Pork with Axone, for an experience you’re unlikely to forget. Special chutneys served with the food include Iromba (made with fermented fish), Axone (made with fermented soybeans), Roasted Tomato and Chicken Liver.
Round off your meal with the Naga staple – Black Rice Pudding – sticky rice sweetened and flavoured with nuts.
The Naga-themed festivities will continue at the bar which will serve special cocktails that best reflect the Naga spirit. The offerings include Hypnotic Hornbill with vodka, watermelon, green tobasco, galangal and egg white, Naga Garden with Tanqueray, kaffir lime leaves, lychee juice, and egg white, Big Yemshe with rum, grape juice, strawberry crush and basil, and many more.
