4 Chocolate Myths that are just not true

on

It’s World Chocolate Day and we at HungryForever have decided to celebrate and embrace this special day by making today about chocolate. Considering how much we love chocolate, it turned out to be easier than we thought.

Chocolate is actually one of the most loved food items on earth. About 7.2 million tons of chocolate are consumed every year and that number only keeps going up. It’s no wonder that there is a day set aside to celebrate the goodness of chocolate.

That said, not all the stories you hear about chocolate are true. So to set the record straight, we have come up with a list of 4 myths about chocolate that are just not true. How much ever we want it to be.

1. Chocolate is high in caffeine

This is just not true. Chocolate does contain caffeine, yes. But it’s not high in content. An average 1 oz. serving of dark chocolate contains less than half the amount of caffeine found in an average cup of black tea. The amount of caffeine in chocolate is in proportion to the percentage of cacao in the product, which means that milk chocolate actually contains less caffeine than semi-sweet or dark chocolate

2. Chocolate contains powerful anti-oxidants

Chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, contains cocoa flavanols and contrary to popular belief cocoa flavonols are not anti-oxidants.

3. Really dark chocolate or chocolate with more than 70% cacao is good for you

While a percentage of cacao as high as seventy percent is likely to contain more cocoa flavanols than a traditional dark chocolate bar, the percentage of cacao is not a reliable indicator of a product’s cocoa flavanol content. Further, chocolate as an energy-dense food with fat and sugar should be enjoyed in moderation as an occasional treat.

4. Chocolate is a health food

While chocolate can be part of your health diet, it is not a health food. Even if a chocolate is high in cocoa flavanols, the calories, fat, and sugar in chocolate make chocolate an occasional indulgence
