A Japanese Delicacy Overtakes Strawberries And Cream At Wimbledon
Wimbledon players and audience palates have seen a shift toward a Japanese delicacy which is quite a surprise for many. So much so, people love it more than strawberry and cream, the most popular food item at SW19, usually enjoyed with a refreshing glass of Pimms.
So what are the people raving about now? It’s sushi. Nope we’re not kidding. Anthony Davies, head of food and beverage at Wimbledon said to Birmingham Mail that the players actually love it because the quick bite of sushi is packed with proteins and carbs. Now, who would have thought of sushi as a quick power snack, right?
Sushi started getting fame at Wimbledon during the tennis tournaments between 2014 and 2016. 17,900 pieces of sushi were sold in 2014 and the sale saw a rise in 2016 to a whopping 54,784 pieces being sold out.
These numbers are compared to a variety of food and beverages sold during the championships. An average of 16,000 portions of fish, 86,000 ice-creams, 30,000 pizzas and 29,000 champagne bottles are sold at the matches at Wimbledon.
