Move Over Rainbow Food, Black Ice Cream Is The New Delicious Food In Town

on

If you’ve been waiting for the day when everybody would stop using food colouring to transform the simplest and most popular of foods into a rainbow mess, we’re here to tell you right now that there’s something so much better.

Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream in New York City have introduced this black ice cream into their menu, but before you start jumping to conclusions, there was no food colouring involved in the process. Instead, Nick Morgenstern, owner and founder of the ice cream shop used coconut ash.

What is Coconut Ash?

In conversation with Mic.com, Morgenstern said that coconut ash is “simply the charred and processed remains of a coconut shell.” While coconut ash is a form of activated charcoal, it’s not necessarily the same thing. “Activated charcoal is just something organic that has been charred and processed with high heat so that it behaves like a filter,” Morgenstern added.

While the coconut ash has health benefits, Morgenstern insists that his reasons for using it for his ice cream go beyond that. He says that he’s “attracted to the flavor and the striking visual component it gives the ice cream” and we can definitely agree on it being the most beautiful ice cream we’ve ever seen.

What does this ice cream taste like?

According to Morgenstern, one lick is a coconut explosion. Especially since it’s made of coconut flakes, coconut cream and coconut milk in addition to the richly pigmented ash. If you’re not a fan of coconut dessert, this is definitely not the ice cream for you. And according to those who have tried the ice cream, the colour will transfer to your mouth and tongue, much like a popsicle would, so maybe don’t eat it during work hours or if you’re going somewhere important after.
