Ustad Hotel ‘Kallumakkayees’ (Mussels) Recipe
We’ve already shared a recipe inspired by Ustad Hotel, a Mallu movie, for authentic Malabari biryani. Today, we turn the focus to a little more off the wall recipe inspired by the movie; Kerala mussel fry.
About Ustad Hotel
Ustad Hotel is a drama about a young man Faizi (Dulquer Salman) who goes against his family’s wishes and becomes a chef running a hotel along with this grandfather. The movie was delightful and had stellar performances by Dulquer and the late Thilakan.
In the movie, Faizi befriends the Kallumakkayees, a band at the hotel. In Malyalam, Kallumakkayees means mussels, hence the inspiration for a dish featuring mussels.
Serve this dish with appams or unpolished rice.

Ingredients
- 15 mussels cleaned
- 5 Shallots chopped
- 1 garlic pod chopped
- 1/2 onion chopped
- 3.4 inch Ginger
- 1 tomato chopped
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- 2 tbsp Oil
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 4 Curry Leaves
- 1 strand coriander leaves

Instructions
- Grind the shallots, red chili powder and garlic into a fine paste.
- Sauté the onion, ginger and curry leaves in hot oil.
- Stir in salt.
- Stir in the paste and then the tomatoes.
- Add the mussels and sauté.
- Add a little water and cook until the mussels are soft.
- Garnish with the coriander leaves and serve.
