A Farm in Space. And no it’s not Tom Cruise’s latest Sci-Fi Movie.

NASA has collaborated with private space shuttle company SpaceX to send “Veggie” into space. “Veggie” is not a cute robot, but it could potentially carry the hopes and dreams of the world. “Veggie” is a plant growth chamber where astronauts will be cultivating red lettuce for consumption.

Scientists are using experiments such as this to see how plants grow in orbit. “Veggie will provide a new resource for U.S. astronauts and researchers as we begin to develop the capabilities of growing fresh produce and other large plants on the space station,” said Gioia Massa, NASA payload scientist for Veggie, in a press release. “Determining food safety is one of our primary goals for this validation test,” she added.

Previously Cherry blossom seeds were planted and results showed that the tree grew 6 times faster than normal and produced less seeds than the mother tree. Now that’s Rad!
