This Study Says You Should Eat Ten Portions Of Fruits and Vegetables A Day For Optimal Health

on

We all know that eating fruits and vegetables is great for the body. Now, a study has suggested that you should be eating above ten portions of fruits and veggies a day to reduce the chances of heart attacks, cancer and strokes.

A Survey Of Studies

Scientists from Imperial College London analysed 95 studies of fruit and vegetable intake. An analysis of the data found that while eating five portions of fruits and vegetables a day (the recommended amount) reduced the risk of life threatening diseases, the risk was lowered even more when one ate ten portions a day. A portion is around 80 grams of the food.

“We wanted to investigate how much fruit and vegetables you need to eat to gain the maximum protection against disease, and premature death. Our results suggest that although five portions of fruit and vegetables is good, ten a day is even better,” said lead study author Dr Dagfinn Aune.

The researchers also looked at which specific vegetables would be most beneficial in lowering the risk of disease; these were apples, pears, citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables (spinach and lettuce), broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.

Seems like a good reason to hit the farmer’s market this weekend, doesn’t it?
