Avocados Are Destroying The Environment And We’re All To Blame

Thanks to every millennial’s new found love of avocados, it only stands to reason that the demand for avocados has gone up in the past couple of years. It’s only simple economics that higher demand leads to increased supply or higher prices or both.

According to the Associated Press, rising demand for avocados — followed by higher fetching prices — is fueling Mexican farmers to expand and destroy much of the country’s pine forests. Obviously bad for the environment, but better for all the avocado toast lovers out there.

In a series of unfortunate events, the United States and Mexico are suffering from a pretty sad avocado shortage which has the potential to only make things worse. The higher prices will undoubtedly lead to more farmers cutting down pine trees in order to grow the cash-rich crop.

While the immediate implication for you or me would be the discomfort of having to forgo a few meals of avocados due to the higher prices the long term, environmental effects are more severe.

So, perhaps the next time you’re tempted to complain about avocado prices (while simultaneously buying them) and contributing to environmental hazards perhaps we could try for a substitute? And for god’s sake let’s stop with the avolatte please, even if it was a joke, enough is enough.
