The Earlier You Wake Up, The Healthier Your Eating Habits According To This Study
You know the saying “the early bird gets the worm?” Well, recent research has found that early birds not just get the worms but are also tend to eat much healthier foods as compared to their night owl counterparts.
Early Birds Get An Extra Advantage
The study was conducted by the National Institute for Health and Welfare at the Department of Public Health Solutions in Helsinki. The researchers studied 2000 people, first deciding whether they were early birds or late birds by studying their biological clocks.
They found that those who were ‘morning people’ tended to make healthier eating choices through the day. ‘Evening people’ ate less protein and more sugar, fat and saturated fatty acids. On weekends, ‘evening people’ tended to eat twice as many meals and have more irregular meal times.
Finally, evening people were less physically active and slept worse overall. All of these behaviours and eating patterns indicate that evening people re significantly unhealthier as compared to morning people.
“Linking what and when people eat to their biological clock type provides a fresh perspective on why certain people are more likely to make unhealthy food decisions,” said Mirkka Maukonen, who led the study. This study shows that evening type people have less favourable eating habits, which may put them at a higher risk for obesity, diabetes and heart disease,” she added.
