Kevin Johnson Just Became Starbucks’ CEO: Here’s What To Expect
Today was a landmark day at Starbucks, the world’s largest chain of coffee cafés. Kevin Johnson just spent his first day in his new role of Starbucks CEO following his predecessor, Howard Shultz’ step down.
In an interview with Kate Taylor of Business Insider, Johnson spoke about his relationship with Shultz as well as what customers can expect from Starbucks in the coming years.
Taking Over From Shultz
Howard Shultz has been associated with the Starbucks brand for 30 years and has helped grow the brand into the worldwide phenomenon it is today. Shultz will continue to work with Starbucks in the capacity of chairman.
He and Johnson share a close relationship. “I’ve learned so much from him,” Johnson said. “He’s an iconic merchant. He’s the iconic merchant of my generation.”
What The Future Holds
In the interview, Johnson told Business Insider that Starbucks will continue taking a stand on social issues; it has pledged to make special efforts to hire veterans and refugees, has made its position on same sex marriage known and in general is concerned and actively involved with the welfare of its partners.
“A key differentiator for Starbucks it is the emotional connection our partners have to what we stand for, and the fact that we are in the business of human connection,” Johnson said.
The chain will be building more Roasteries – high end coffee experiential restaurants in an attempt to diversify what it offers; “We use different formats, but with the same formula of customer connection,” said Johnson.
Additionally, it will look to technical innovations. It recently rolled out mobile ordering, which it will attempt to fine tune. It also opened its first only mobile order and pay store in Seattle.
Finally, Johnson shared his typical coffee order; “It is a triple espresso macchiato, or a triple espresso americano, depending on if I want a macchiato or americano.”
