New Research Shows That Wine Isn’t Really All That Good For You

on

Did you spend your weekend indulging on a fine, mature bottle of red? And then, did you allow yourself another bottle because hey – loads of research has shown that wine is actually good for you, right? Wrong.

The Chief Medical Officer in the UK, Dame Sally Davies, just published a report that refutes a variety of studies that say wine is good for you. Additionally, the report establishes a new set of drinking guidelines suggesting that drinkers go off booze for at least two nights a week to give their bodies a chance to recover.

Debunking Myths

While the idea that wine can prevent heart disease is a popular one, researchers for this report found that this is only true for women over 55, and only when drunk in small amounts.

Additionally, the research has found that drinking a glass of wine a day can increase the risk of developing a variety of cancers as well as hamper muscle healing.

In short, the report does acknowledge some minor benefits of drinking wine, but argues that the risks far outweigh any benefits.

“What we are aiming to do with these guidelines is give the public the latest and most up to date scientific information so that they can make informed decisions about their own drinking and the level of risk they are prepared to take,” said Davies in a statement about the report.
