Som Tom (Thai Green Papaya Salad) Recipe

Everybody loves a healthy and sumptuous dish to gorge on. And this dish becomes that much better is it scores high on the flavor scale as well. One such uber delicious and supremely healthy recipe comes from Thailand, namely, the Som Tom, a.k.a., Green Papaya Salad. As the name suggests, this salad is a wholesome amalgam of healthy green papaya fired up with Thai chilies, Kaffir limes, palm sugar, roasted peanuts, and fish sauce. What makes this salad even better is an (optional) addition of dried shrimps. What more do you need? Here’s a quick 15-minute recipe to help you whip up some delicious Som Tom this weekend!

Instructions
  1. Pound the garlic and chilies in a mortar for a few seconds until the garlic is crushed and chilies are reduced to small bits.
  2. Add ½ tablespoon of palm sugar, 1 tablespoon of fish sauce, and then squeeze the juice from 1 - 2 limes into the mortar. Mix and pound the dressing, making sure the palm sugar gets fully dissolved into the liquid.
  3. Add a handful of roasted peanuts, 1 tablespoon of dried shrimp, and then roughly slice in the tomatoes into the mortar. Pound the mixture lightly for about 30 seconds, lightly breaking up the tomatoes, shrimp, and peanuts.
  4. Toss a big handful of the green papaya shavings and the dressing together. Mix well so that the dressing coats all the green papaya and that the salad is evenly mixed through and through.
  5. Serve.
