Researchers In Singapore Believe That Tea Can Stop Cognitive Decline In The Elderly
Last week, we told you all about how the caffeine in coffee can reduce the risk of dementia. Now, in supporting news a recent study published by researchers from the National University of Singapore has found that a cup of tea a day can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia developing in senior citizens.
A Cup Of Tea A Day Keeps Dementia Away
The researchers studied a group of Chinese elderly participants, aged 55 years or older. It found that a regular consumption of tea reduced the risk of cognitive decline by 50%.
The researchers did not stress on a particular type of tea, but suggested that tea made with tea leaves would be better.
“While the study was conducted on Chinese elderly, the results could apply to other races as well,” said Assistant Professor Feng Lei from NUS.
“Our findings have important implications for dementia prevention. Despite high quality drug trials, effective pharmacological therapy for neurocognitive disorders such as dementia remains elusive and current prevention strategies are far from satisfactory,” he added.
