Try These Delicious Old Monk Cocktails This Weekend To Stir Up Some Nostalgia

Many Indians have a nostalgic relationship with Old Monk rum. Perhaps it was the first drink you had. Or perhaps you and a college romance grew closer after a couple of glasses of Old Monk and Coke. Maybe it was the cause of your first hangover.

Years and years after it was launched, Old Monk remains one of India’s most popular hard alcohols; it’s cheap (around Rs.750 for 650 ml), it’s fairly smooth for its price and it gets you buzzed with a nominal amount.

While your college days may have been spent diluting Old Monk with Coke why not shake things up a bit and make some elevated Old Monk cocktails this weekend? Try these simple recipes and fall in love with Old Monk all over again:

The Painkiller

This is a popular tropical cocktail most often served on the rocks. It’s sweet, refreshing and smooth.

Make It: Combine 60 ml Old Monk with 120 Ml pineapple juice, 30 ml orange juice and 30 ml coconut cream in a tumbler. Shake well, pour into a glass and garnish with an orange wedge. Serve chilled.

The Mai Tai

This one is another tropical cocktail that finds its roots in Jamaica. While Jamaican rum is traditionally used to make it, try some Old Monk instead; the results may surprise you!

Make It: Combine 60 ml Old Monk, the juice of one lime, 30 ml blue curacao and 15 ml sugar syrup.
Shake in a cocktail shaker and pour into a glass with crushed ice. Garnish with a lime rind.

The Daiquiri

The Daiquiri is a classic cocktail that combines the depth of rum with the zestiness of citrus.

Make It: Combine 60 ml Old Monk with 30 ml lime juice and 15 ml of 2 cups sugar dissolved in 1 cup water. Shake this mixture in a shaker and pour over a glassful of crushed ice. Serve!

Make It: Blend 45 ml Old Monk, 10 ml mint syrup, 5 ml lime juice and 90 ml mango puree in a bar blender. Serve chilled.
