Burger King Just Filed A Complain Against Pennywise The ‘It’ Clown

Becoming popular comes with a fair share of ups and downs, and there are no exceptions even in the case of Pennywise, the infamous sewer clown, who has recently garnered a lot of fame in It. The movie adaptation of Stephen King’s popular horror novel of the same name, features the sewer-dwelling clown called Pennywise, who lures kids and kills them (like we needed any more reasons to be absolutely terrified of the circus character). Burger King Russia, however, is not scared of this demon and has filed a legal complaint with the Federal Anti-Monopoly Service, calling for a ban on the film.

Obviously Burger King isn’t doing this out of fear of the clown! The fast food giant’s objection stems from the concern that people may confuse Pennywise with the Burger King’s archrival McDonald’s mascot – the redheaded, dungaree-clad Ronald McDonald. According to the burger titan’s complain, their sales stand threatened given the popularity of Pennywise.

The FAS is currently investigating the matter, but a spokesperson for the organisation tells the Hollywood Reporter: “We can’t be concerned with the content of the film because the writer and director have their own creative understanding of any character.”

Meanwhile, It has been raking in some big numbers and is currently topping the Russian box office. According to Eater, film has made around $14 million in the Russian market, and is still being screened in around 100 theaters. That said, Burger King shouldn’t worry about Pennywise because honestly, even if we did confuse the sewer clown with Ronald, the last thing we’d want to do is eat anything with the clown’s face slapped across it!
