New York’s DŌ Cafe Is Getting Sued After Their Edible Cookie Dough Made People Sick

Remember how your mom never let you lick the bowl after whipping up a batch of her world famous cookies? Well, it turns out that she wasn’t trying to keep you from living your best life, and cookie dough can make you sick, really sick. DŌ Cafe, the ones responsible for all that edible cookie dough craze, are actually getting sued after people ate their dishes and ended up with food poisoning like symptoms.

PEOPLE reports.Julia Canigiani and Katherine Byrne filed a class-action lawsuit against the cookie dough shop for making customers sick and falsely claiming the food was safe to eat. Since we’re aware that eating raw cookie dough could give us salmonella, the whole point is that DŌ Cafe claimed that their dough was safe to eat.

Their website says,“All ingredients in each of our delicious, homemade recipes are completely safe to consume just as they are – unbaked. We give you peace of mind, allowing you to eat a piece of cookie dough heaven how you like it best.”

The shop uses a pasteurized egg product (“which means there is NO chance of salmonella,” the site says) and heat-treated, ready-to-eat flour to make the cookie dough.

Canigiani and Byrne ordered two different menu items — an ice cream sandwich made with frozen cookie dough “cookies” and a scoop of oatmeal M&M cookie dough. Both claim to have experienced severe stomach pain within 15 minutes of eating the dough, followed by vomiting and diarrhea that night. They are looking to represent other consumers who have gotten sick while eating at DŌ Cafe.

In a statement to PEOPLE, DŌ stood by the safety of their product. “We will fully and faithfully defend ourselves against any and all false accusations,” the statement reads. “The health and happiness of our customers has, and always will be, a top priority.”

Well, I guess we’ll find out who comes out on top in the end!
