Just When You Thought You’d Seen It All, There’s Deep Fried Water
You read that right. Deep. Fried. Water.
Meet YouTuber Jonathan Marcus who created these crispy balls of moisture for an event in San Francisco called the Stupid Shit No One Needs and Terrible Ideas Hackathon 2.0 where people “Work diligently on projects that make no sense at all. Come make something we will all regret.”
If you’re thinking that everything in your life has been a lie, then you’re in for an even bigger treat. Marcus used frozen reverse spherification (which is calcium alginate membrane) to create a solid mass of water. Then, this liquid ball was breaded in flour, egg and panko crumbs and then ever so gently placed into a deep fryer. And then when it’s taken out and cut, well… no surprise there, water comes out. Ta da.
In normal circumstances, pairing water and oil is a big ‘no-no’ in the kitchen, because everything that can go wrong will go wrong. So along with the video, Marcus left a “warning” for those watching: “This is potentially very dangerous. If water leaks out while the sphere is frying in hot oil, it may explode, sending scalding oil everywhere. Do not attempt without proper safety precautions. Do not consume until cooled down or you may get burned. Also they don’t taste particularly good. You have been warned.”
You obviously want to see what the big deal is, so here’s the video you’ve been waiting for. Be prepared for a mind blown moment.
