Let’s go bananas this summer!

on

There is a reason the minions are crazy about the banana. They not only taste wonderful but are also an excellent source of nutrients for your body. Here are five reasons why you should stick to this yummy fruit this summer.

  1. Bananas with their cache of vitamin B6 are good for the blood and the immune system. This particular vitamin produces antibodies and can check the blood sugar levels. It is believed that a banana a day can take care of one-fifth of our dietary needs.
  2. Bananas, being very rich in potassium and very low in sodium help manage blood pressure better. They also help maintain water balance in the body and detoxify the body to protect you against heart attack and stroke.
  3. With an average of 105 calories, banana is an excellent source of instant energy. It is especially great as an after workout food because it instantly replenishes the low levels of glucose in the blood – commonly seen after a workout. Eat a banana immediately after your workout to give you that instant kick of energy. Here is more on what you should eat before and after workouts.
  4. Both the fruit and stem are rich in fibre and pectin which helps assist bowel motility and eases out constipation. Alternatively you can even drink the juice prepared from the banana plant stem.
  5. The probiotic effect of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) present in bananas helps stimulate the growth of friendly bacteria in the intestine and protects you against gastric disturbances. It is also good for your bone health too.

And now for summer sweetness, here’s an easy peasy recipe for homemade banana ice cream.
