A few days ago Krispy Kreme announced that it would be giving away a free doughnut for everyone who comes bearing an ‘I Voted’ sticker on Election Day in the US. Reason enough to vote, right? While voters can pick any one doughnut their sweet tooth desires, we’re guessing most will go for their Original Glazed Doughnut.
The Original Glazed doughnuts are available when Krispy Kreme puts its Hot Light™ on signifying that there’s a batch of freshly baked dougnuts awaiting customers. Wear, fresh, chewy and sweet, the doughnuts get sold out pretty quickly.
If you’re not in the US or arrive at Krispy Kreme too late to take advantage of the Election Day offer and get yourself one of these treats, we’re sharing a recipe for copycat Original Glazed Doughnut; give it a try this Sunday!

Instructions
Dissolve the yeast in warm water.
Add the milk, sugar, salt, eggs, shortening and two cups of flour.
Beat this mixture together for 30 seconds on the 'low' setting.
Beat for 2 more minutes on the 'medium' setting.
Stir in the remaining flour.
Cover the mixture and allow to rise for an hour.
Roll the dough into a 1/2 thick disc.
Cut the dough into doughnuts with a floured doughnut cutter.
Cover and allow to stand for 40 minutes.
Meanwhile, make the glaze by gently whisking together the (slightly melted) butter, powdered sugar, vanilla and hot water.
Heat oil for deep frying.
Slide the doughnuts into the oil and fry for a minute on each side.
Take out of the oil and drain.
Dip into the glaze and then allow to cool on a rack.
