Bakery Outlet To Be Opened By Bengaluru Central Prison Inmates

on

Yes, you read that correctly. The prison inmates at Bengaluru Central Prison are all set to open a bakery outlet at Infosys’ Electronics City headquarters. The bakery shop, which supplies its products to over 45 outlets across the city, has been given the go-ahead to set up a stall in the space provided by Infosys.

The bakery products are produced at the Parappana Agrahara penitentiary and because of the its close proximity to Electronics City, a proposal was sent to several IT companies for opening of the outlet. According to Kamal Pant, Additional DGP (Prisons), Infosys were the one of the first ones to respond to the proposal.

Speaking to Economic Times, Pant said, “We sent a proposal to IT companies located in Electronics City seeking space within their premises to set up a bakery . Infosys has expressed its interest. Since it is not far from Parappana Agrahara, we will serve the bakes while they are hot.” Although Infosys is currently trying to figure out the logistics behind such a move, there is some hope that the outlet will be given a final confirmation soon.

The inmates are involved in the entire production process of baking goods such as vegetable puffs, honey cakes, bread toast, biscuits and cookies. This activity is looked at as a way to give the prison inmates a chance to make a living. Assitant Superintendent of Police, Suresh K said, “It’s a means of livelihood as they go on to work in bakeries outside. This is the very purpose of setting up the bakery.”
