McDonald’s Outlets In Maharashtra Directed Not To Serve Coke Zero

McDonald’s outlets across Maharashtra have been prohibited from serving Coke Zero by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration.

This directive comes after the FDA noticed that McDonald’s was not serving the Coke Zero, which contains artificial sweeteners, with mandatory healthy warnings. These warnings are supposed to draw attention to the fact that Coke Zero contains aspartame and acesulfame potassium, artificial sweeteners which can cause obesity, insulin resistance, blood pressure problems and are especially harmful to children and pregnant women.

McDonald’s served these drinks without suggesting that they are not recommended for children. Additionally, the chain does not warn customers that the drink contains phenylalanine, which can be harmful for those who suffer from phenylketonuria.

“For the latter, particularly, such a violation can be critical,” said FDA commissioner Dr Harshdeep Kamble to the Economic Times. “Phenylketonuria is a rare genetic disorder and those who suffer from it cannot break down phenylalanine, a component of aspartame (one of the sweeteners). Their excess intake can lead to an unusual buildup in the body. Children can suffer from serious neurological deficiencies as a result of consuming the drink unknowingly.”

McDonald’s has been prohibited from serving Coke Zero from its dispenser, but can continue selling cans of it.
