Subway’s New Reuben Sandwiches Are Everything You Want

on

There’s nothing more satisfying than a juicy meaty sandwich, with the perfect balance of sauces and vegetables. Sometimes, its hard to find such sandwiches at just any bakery or cafe. Thank the food universe we have Subway!

Apart from their popular crowd favourites, they have announced the addition of two limited-time Reuben sandwiches that you are going to want to try. The new sandwiches will be available through January 1, 2017 at the suggested price of $5.25 for a 6-inch and $8.75 for a Footlong.

For those in the dark, the Reuben sandwich is an American hot sandwich composed of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing. Working around this concept, Subway’s two new sandwiches are a Corned Beef Reuben and a Turkey Reuben. Sadly, these sandwiches aren’t being made for the Indian market, at present.

However, for all you meat lovers who love a good challenge, take inspiration from these sandwiches and come up with your own variations at home!

The Reuben Sandwiches

So what do you need to recreate these meaty delights? Each sandwich features a hefty portion of meat, Bavarian style sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing. What makes the sandwich stand out is the rye bread which is its vessel.

Make Your Own Reuben Sandwich

It’s really not that difficult to whip up a good ol’ American style Reuben Sandwich! For those already inspired, here is the process. However, we highly recommend trying your own variations and letting us know of your culinary creations!

Bavarian Style Sauerkraut

Heat bacon drippings in a large skillet over medium heat; cook and stir onion until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Place sauerkraut with juice into a large bowl and cover with water. Stir brown sugar, caraway seeds, chicken stock, and cooking sherry into the sauerkraut mixture. Voila!

Thousand Island Dressing

Buy your favourite thousand island dressing from the store. Or go one step further and make your own by mixing mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, finely diced onions, minced garlic, white vinegar, salt, and tabasco sauce, in a bowl. Then refrigerate. It’s that simple! Five minutes and a little chilling time in the fridge, and you’ve got a tangy, zesty, secret sauce to add to your salads and sandwiches!

Rye Bread

This is what binds the entire sandwich together! While you can use store-bought rye bread, we suggest making your own!

To make your own, combine yeast, sugar, melted butter, egg, and milk in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook. Beat on low-speed. Then, add salt, rye flour, all-purpose flour, and caraway seeds and beat until all the flour is incorporated. Next, beat until the mixture forms a ball, leaves the sides of the bowl and climbs up the dough hook. Remove the dough from the bowl. Using your hands, form the dough into a smooth ball. Lightly oil a bowl. Place the dough in the bowl and turn it to oil all sides. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm, draft-free place until it doubles in size.

Once doubled, remove the dough from the bowl and invert onto a lightly floured surface. Tuck and roll so that any seams disappear into the dough and place in a baking pan. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm, draft-free place until it doubles in size again. Use a pastry brush and brush some egg lightly over the top of the dough. Bake until lightly brown. Remove from the oven and cool on a rack.

To assemble your sandwich, slice your bread, top it with swiss cheese and the sauerkraut, stuff it with a hefty portion of meat (the sky is the limit here) and slap some Thousand Island dressing on the top! Droolworthy? We think so!
