Vegetarians Sit Up: Taco Bell Puts On A Massive Veggie Hat!

on

Yesterday Taco Bell, an American fast food chain, became the first restaurant in its category to release a certified vegetarian menu.

Taco Bell revealed that the new menu gets a ‘certified’ label because the American Vegetarian Association (AVA) evaluated the items on the menu and approved them as fully vegetarian. To get this approval, the AVA asses the ingredients in each dish; if it contains eggs and dairy it can be called vegetarian, whereas if it has no animal by-products it is called vegan.

Items on the new menu sound appealing, even to us hard-core carnivores. Vegetarians can choose between a 7-layer Burrito, Bean Burrito, Cantina Power Veggie Bowl, Cheese Roll-Up and Double Tostada among other items.

“At Taco Bell, vegetarians are not an afterthought. We sell more than 350 million vegetarian menu items each year, but until now haven’t been vocal about it,” said Brian Niccol the CEO of Taco Bell in a press release. The press release also reveals that customers at Taco Bell can build their own vegetarian or vegan meals with the 35 vegetarian and 26 vegan ingredients that Taco Bell now offers.

Taco Bell has been updating its menu and practices by increasing transparency in terms of ingredients and nutritional value of their products. This move is sure to appease a large section of customers in an increasingly healthy conscious society.
