8 Foods Which Are Adversely Impacting Climate Change
A few days ago, we talked about how eating insects can help save the environment. That’s because if people chose to eat insects instead of beef, they’re reducing the amount of resources, energy and emissions needed to raise beef-bearing animals.
Recently, a study from the Natural Resources Defence Council supported this idea; each kilogram of beef produces 26.5 kilograms of CO2 emissions. The NRDC also put together a list of other foods whose production is speeding up climate change. Take a look:
Lamb
For each kilo of lamb meat consumed, there are 22.9 kilos of emissions.
Butter
According to the study, one kilo of butter produces 12 kilos of emissions. It’s especially damaging amongst dairy products because of the many stages it takes to process butter.
Shellfish
Shellfish also takes a create amount of energy to produce; however, data shows that people are eating less and less shellfish.
Cheese
As well as butter, cheese is another dairy product which can contribute to climate change. Cheese is kept at a refrigerated temperature when being transported and stored.
Asparagus
Surprisingly, asparagus creates 8.9 kilos of emissions per kilo produces. This is because it’s imported; transportation causes a majority of the emissions.
Pork
One kilo of pork creates 7.9 kilos of carbon emissions.
Chicken and Turkey
Both chicken and turkey have a role in increasing carbon footprints. Five kilos of emissions are produced per kilo of the two poultry items.
