Mcdonald’s India Is Recycling Its Used Cooking Oil To Make Biodiesel

on

Taking a step towards creating a sustainable environment, McDonald’s India has begun recycling its cooking oil. The used oil will be converted to biodiesel which will power their refrigerated supply delivery trucks. The initiation of the project has begun from the city of Mumbai as the master franchisee Hardcastle Restaurants Pvt Ltd (HRPL) has been powering the trucks in the city by using the leftover cooking oil.

Saving The Environment

A statement by McDonald’s said that this project was in its initiation stage last year and now 85 restaurants in Mumbai are sending out cooking oil to be converted into biodiesel. With that, 35,000 litres of cooking oil is getting converted into biodiesel. The company estimates that it’ll be able to save more than 420,000 litres of crude oil each year.

“We strongly believe in protecting our environment and that makes sustainability and conservation an important part of our operations in India,” said Amit Jatia, Vice Chairman, Westlife Development Ltd. “Today, we are happy to announce this industry-leading initiative towards sustainability by converting our used oil into biodiesel for distribution of supplies at our restaurants. This is just the beginning and we will continue to champion the cause of environment protection in the years to come. We are grateful to our suppliers who have closely worked with us to improve the economic, ethical, and environmental impact of our supply chain.”

The project doesn’t just end here, as HRPL is planning to cover 450-500 McDonald’s restaurants within the next four years. This effort will utilise 15 lakh litres of used cooking oil to make biodiesel reducing 4,000 MT of carbon emissions. “We are delighted to know that that Hardcastle Restaurants Pvt Ltd (HRPL) has become the first restaurant chain in the country to implement sustainable Biodiesel by successfully recycling its Used Cooking Oil,” said Sandeep Chaturvedi, President of the Biodiesel Association Of India. “HRPL & Unicon Biofuels has been working for the past one year to convert Used Cooking Oil to Biodiesel as per Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The Biodiesel Association of India (BDAI) encourages all food companies to learn from this initiative and apply it in their own business model.”
