The Indian Diet Is Getting Sweeter And It’s Doing Us No Good

Recently, The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal published a study that revealed that the intake of processed sugars is on the rise all over the world, especially in developing countries. 

“Sugar consumption is rising fastest in low and middle-income countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, the researchers wrote in the paper in the journal. It’s possible that this could be because of the easy availability and low cost of sugar charged foods and drinks such as biscuits, chocolates and soft drinks.

Meanwhile according to data from the India Sugar Trade Industry in 2013, Indians are the largest consumers of sugar in the world, probably because of our overwhelming love for highly sugared sweets such jalebis, rabdi and kulfi along with the popularity of processed drinks.
