Amul To Launch Frozen Potato Products
The famous milk co-operative, Amul is all set to launch frozen potato products in India. One can expect frozen foods in the form of French fries, potato wedges, hash browns and burger patty. The products are due to hit the Indian markets before Diwali according to the reports by the Times of India.
“We will launch potato products such as French fries and burger patty in the second week of October,” said RS Sodhi, managing director, Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) to the reporters during the Red Bricks Summit at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. The federation is responsible for marketing the brand Amul.
Procuring Directly From Farmers
The unique thing about these frozen potato products will be that Amul will be sourcing directly from the farmers of Gujarat. The intention is to procure about one lakh tonnes of potatoes from north Gujarat famous for the quality of the potatoes. “Amul has readied a plant for these products near Mehsana and its production capacity will be 50,000 tonnes. For this, we require1lakh tonnes of potatoes,” Sodhi added.
After milk, potatoes are the second commodity that the brand will be procuring directly from farmers and just like the milk producers, the farmers too will be provided remunerative prices. The potatoes will be taken through contract farming wherein the seeds will be provided by Amul. “The plant is soon going to start production and our products will be priced 15%-20% cheaper than those already available in the market,” Sodhi said.
