Anthony Bourdain Hates Yelp & Yelpers, Here’s Why

A Yelp review – and Yelpers – can virtually make or break your restaurant business. The restaurant review and reservation service has found itself in the midst of major eatery-customer beef in the past but this time popular chef, TV host, and author Anthony Bourdain is out to give the website a piece of his mind.

 

A Message For Yelpers

In a recent interview for Business Insider, the Parts Unknown host and Danny Bowien, the chef behind Mission Chinese, sat down to talk about the former’s upcoming documentary on food waste – Wasted! – and the “ever-changing food landscape”. However, soon Bourdain went on to trash the living life out of Yelp and Yelpers.

“There’s really no worse, or lower human being than an elite Yelper”, he said adding “they’re universally loathed by chefs everywhere. They are the very picture of entitled, negative energy. They’re bad for chefs, they’re bad for restaurants.”

Harsh as his words may be, think about them. Bourdain is right, it is super easy to sit behind a computer screen or hide behind a smartphone and write cruel reviews. And while what you write is probably something you experienced at a restaurant, it’s perhaps wise to thinks about what a review can do to the eatery’s image.

Social Media In A Nutshell

Given, Bourdain isn’t the first chef to trash Yelp, he sure is the first one to do it so explicitly. But it wasn’t all Yelp-trashing that happened in the interview. Bourdain spoke about social media websites Twitter and Instagram, calling them “a fully democratic bathroom wall that anyone can write on”. Ouch.

He further added, explaining, social media behavior as observed by him, “People relate to certain foods and feel strongly about them. And they either want to share them on Instagram, or make other people feel bad about what they’re eating by showing them”.
