Are Pizza And Chocolate As Addictive As Drugs?
Every ardent pizza lover and cocoa junkie’s answer to this question would be a frantic nod because their mouths are stuffed with the respective “addictions”. But on a more serious note (yes, way more serious than pizza), a recent study states that pizza is almost as addicting as drugs.
There you go, all your irrational cravings won’t seem baseless now because you’re an addict. Disturbing as it sounds, science approves the fact so shut up and accept it.
Food Drugs
In a study published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS One, researchers from the University of Michigan have discovered that a group of processed grubs can be as addictive as drugs. According to the study, the human body reacts to processed foods in a similar manner to the way it does to drugs like cocaine. Which simply means that certain food have addictive properties.
Earlier this month, a scientist concluded that cheese scored as high as morphine on the addiction chart but interestingly enough, of the 10 foods that made it to the top 10 of the ‘addictive food list’, cheese was on number 10. And o course pizza leading the lost has a lot to do with the inevitable cheesy toppings.
Drug Ranks
The food items in the list were ranked based on characteristics like the rate at which refined carbs are absorbed by the body, sugar levels and glycemic index.
Here is the entire list of “food drugs” as published in the study:
#10 Cheese
#9 Cake
#8 Soda
#7 Cheeseburger
#6 French Fries
#5 Ice Cream
#4 Cookies
#3 Chips
#2 Chocolate
#1 Pizza
Clearly, we have been drug addicts all our lives without even knowing it.
