A day after Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages announced that they plan to open two new plants to increase their production capabilities, the Atlanta based Coca Cola has revealed that it may be looking at setting up a plant in Sri Lanka. This plant will produce beverages to cater to a demand from India, which has the highest demand for Coca Cola’s products in South Asia.
Statement From The Sri Lankan Finance Ministry
This plan came to light when Sri Lanka’s Finance Ministry issued a statement that top officials at Coca Cola were considering opening production hub in Sri Lanka.
“They pointed out that Sri Lanka could be developed into a production hub to re-export their products to India. India has the highest demand for Coca Cola products in the South Asian region,” said finance minister Ravi Karunananayke.
If the hub is set up, Coca Cola will use Sri Lanka’s water resources to manufacture a range of Coca Cola beverages including Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, Thums Up, Minute Maid, Maaza and Limca. These will then be exported.
According to data on the Indian Beverage Association website, the non-alcoholic beverages market i India is worth around $5 billion.
