DMRC Planning A Food Plaza At Delhi’s Barakhamba Metro Station
Usually Delhi’s metro stations are well stocked with food and refreshment kiosks, apart from a few fancier metro stations that have eateries with sitting spaces or even an entire multi-level food plaza to themselves (yes, Nehru Place, Rajiv Chowk, HUDA City Center we are looking at you guys). Joining the latter is Central Delhi’s super-busy Barakhamba Metro Station.
Wondering where exactly the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation plans to erect the food plaza? Well it is a tad confusing, given the area is speckled with a number of skyscrapers. But the DMRC has managed to scale out a sizeable piece of unused barren land that will now house the structure adjacent to the station.

“We have 2,400 sqft of land and have proposed that it be given on lease basis where the lessee will have to develop, operate and maintain the food plaza or cafeteria,” said a metro official. The plot has been barren ever since the DMRC acquired it in 2005.
Given Barakhamba’s awkward proximity to the bustling Rajiv Chowk metro station and Connaught Place, the food plaza is probably a good idea who want to just chill or grab a bite without having to walk the extra few hundred meters.
The project site falls in the Central Business District (CBD) as per the Master Plan of Delhi, 2021. Moreover, the single-storey structure will be a temporary construction with mezzanine floors.

“The structures will have to be without any foundation or footing, so it can be removed when required. Fabric structures, building systems and steel prefab structures will be used. The exteriors, especially the glass facade, will be developed in harmony to the existing design of the station,” said another official.
The project is aimed to generate up-front and recurring revenues for the DMRC and supplement its non fare-box collections in the operation phase, reported Metro Rail News.
