Food Packets Served In Indian Railways To Have More Information

on

In an effort to improve the catering services of the Indian Railways, the minister of Railways of India, Piyush Goyal has asked the officials to mention more information on the food served in trains reports NDTV. Currently the food served only indicates whether the contents are vegetarian or non-vegetarian.

Goyal has addressed a letter to all the zonal general managers mentioning that information like name of the supplier or contractor, weight, date of packing and a distinct symbol indicating if it is vegetarian or non-vegetarian should be on the food item. He also mentioned that the changes should be made with an immediate effect.

“Honourable Minister of Railways has decided that each food box/casserole in which food is packed and sold on trains must have these details,” said the letter from Sanjiv Garg, Additional Member (Tourism and Catering), Railway Board.

Only a few days back, a letter was sent to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and all the general managers of Zonal Railways by Goyal to keep the overcharging of food by catering contractors and staff under check. This letter issued on 5th September also mentioned that special emphasis should be on maintaining hygiene and quality of the food.
