The Great Wall At The Leela, Mumbai Has A New Menu Which Will Take You On A Delicious Trip To China

on

In the midst of Mumbai’s hustle and bustle sits an oasis of calm; The Leela Mumbai, an expansive property which offers its guests the chance to unwind right in the heart of the city. The Leela houses a variety of facilities that promise a sublime experience from a spa to luxurious rooms and suites to – the ultimate temptation for us – a range of fine dining restaurants.

These include Jamvar, The Leela’s Indian Speciality restaurant which serves authentic cuisine from the nation’s northern to southern tips, Le Cirque Signature, an Italian space known for its wine selection and Six Degrees, a poolside bar which serves exquisite cocktails and small plates.

A few months ago, we dined at Six Degrees for their Barbeque Night and were bowled over by the fare which included grilled seafood, tenderloin and chops. Last week, we continued our journey down The Leela’s culinary offerings by dining at The Great Wall, its Chinese restaurant.

Inside The Great Wall

The Great Wall is arguably Andheri’s best authentic Chinese dining restaurant and has been a favourite destination amongst regular travellers to Mumbai and locals alike.

It’s a beautifully lit, elegantly decorated space with Oriental music floating through the air. The soothing ambience is elevated with the restaurant’s view; a silvery waterfall running over rocks falling into small stream.

All in all, it makes for the perfect destination to soak up some relaxation and enjoy a delicious meal.  The Great Wall’s menu allows one to do just that with a wide selection of seafood, meats, dim sum, soups, noodles and rice.

Recently, The Great Wall added some new dishes to its menu which plac ea focus on fresh ingredients, unique flavours and current food trends. Speaking on the launch of the new menu, Chef Surender Mohan, Head of Kitchen at The Leela Mumbai said “In our endeavor to bring the best Chinese food to town, we have focused on the use of fresh ingredients and flavours along with traditional cooking techniques. We have designed this menu keeping into account the growing trends and feedback from our esteemed guests.”

Tasting The Talk

After settling ourselves at a table which looks out to the waterfall and pouring over the menu, we called for a host of appetisers; the Sweet Corn Soup with Minced Chicken and Egg White,  the Prawn Cheong Fun Dim Sum, the Five Spice Chinese barbeque Pork Spare Ribs and the Wok Fried Sichuan Prawns.

All the appetisers were exemplary, but we especially loved the Crispy Prawn Cheong Fun Dim Sum. The Cheong Fun is a dim sum roll made with steamed rice noodles. This one had a soft, yielding wrapper whose texture contrasted beautiful with the crispy prawn underneath.

The Wok Fried Sichuan Prawns are perfect for the spice loving palate with succulent prawns in a fiery sauce while the Barbeque Pork Spare Ribs were delicately spiced and tender.

With the delicious taste of the spare ribs lingering in our mouths we turned our attention back to the menu and began calling for our mains which included the Steamed Fish With Black Bean Sauce, Wok Fried Tenderloin, Wild Mushrooms in Clay Pot, Stir Fried Chicken With Chili and Three Mushroom Rice.

The Steamed Pomfret was soft and flaky, nestled in a subtly spicy black bean sauce and tasted great when paired with the sticky three mushroom rice.

We absolutely loved the Wild Mushrooms in Clay Pot which combined a wide range of mushrooms -from button to shiitake to oyster – to create an earthy, wholesome dish. Our ultimate favourite of the mains selection was the Wok Fried Tenderloin which boasted incredibly succulent, soft meat in a peppery, rich sauce.

By the time we finished polishing off the tenderloin, our taste buds were dancing and our stomachs were heaving, but we were too tempted by the sound of the Chef’s Special Gula pudding to pass up on dessert. It was interesting dish, which balanced thick sago pearls with sweet palm sugar (Gula meaka). We also enjoyed the Cantonese style Mango pudding which had sago pearls in a rich mango puree.

Don’t you agree that the meal looked absolutely sumptuous? Head to The Leela to get a taste of The Great Wall’s delicious new menu yourself.
