Here’s Why You Should Or Should Not Put Eggs In The Refrigerator
Many countries like the US sell eggs kept under refrigeration but you’ll also find your local shopkeepers selling them at room temperature. So which method is the right one? The fact is, both!
It really depends on whether the eggs have been washed thoroughly or not. If the eggs are unwashed, the outer covering or “bloom” protects it from air and bacteria. Once washed, the coating is gone and the eggs are vulnerable to bacteria. The washed eggs need to be refrigerated to keep them fresh.
As for the US, they make sure the eggs are squeaky clean and so these need to be kept in the refrigerator. Business Insider reports, “The USDA requires that eggs destined for supermarket shelves — called graded eggs — are washed and sprayed with a chemical sanitizer before they are sold to the public to reduce the risk of salmonella infection.”
Naturally, the eggs will taste better if they are kept outside but if you’re doing that make sure you consume them sooner. For safer side, you can always put them in the fridge.
