Kerala Airport Eatery Probed After Actor Anusree Complains About Over-Priced Bill

on

Whenever we’re at an airport, it is kind of understood that the food bill will be inflated. And while we may not want to spend an exorbitant amount on a McD, KFC or Costa, many have justified the phenomenon. A few of the reason why food at airport outlets costs more is the fact that airport space costs a whopper; the high-security zone has more demand than supply as passengers can’t carry their own food; and other such factors.

What Happened

While some make their peace with it and move, there are others who couldn’t give a flying airhostess about inflated airport prices. Actor Anusree, for instance. A couple days back, the actress shared a picture of her airport food bill on her Facebook page. She alleged that the eatery, located at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport had charged her INR 680 for just a coffee, a tea, and two chicken puffs. And although, the post soon became the butt of many jokes and root of endless memes, there have been serious consequences as well.

The matter trickled into the Human Rights Commission, which has now come into action on the matter, courtesy the complaint of Sherin Kavadiyar, President of Royal Kavadiyar Protection Forum. Kavadiyar ordered an inquiry into the high prices at Kitchen Restaurant, the outlet that managed to squeeze the big buck out of Anusree.

The Probe

In his complaint Kavadiyar has alleged that the restaurant in question follows certain unethical measures like not providing rate cards to customers, and charging customers exorbitant amounts of money despite not even having a star rating. He also added that the lack of eating options at the airport leave travellers with no choice but to purchase the over-priced food.

An order has been issued by the Commission’s acting chairperson P Mohandas, which has asked the Airport Director, the manager of Kitchen Restaurant, the Secretary of Consumer Affairs, the Commissioner of Food Safety, and the Commissioner of Legal Metrology have all been asked to submit a report to the Commission on the issue within a month.

The case is scheduled for hearing on November 1.
