Kroger Recalls Unrefrigerated Caramel Apples That Are Suspected To Be At Risk

on

Product recalls have been making news in the food industry lately. Joining in the recalls is Kroger, pulling down a range of unrefrigerated caramel apples. Scientific evidence has given proof that these caramel apples, that are pierced with dipping sticks, may be at risk for listeriosis. This is a bacterial infection that usually affects older adults, especially those with weaker immunity, pregnant women, and newborns. Contaminated food products could be a threat with this infection, leading to potential risks for the company.

However, no illnesses have been reported. An online study published by the American Society of Microbiology, led Kroger to take cautious measures to recall their products before the threat of a risk broke out. Payton Pruett, Kroger food safety’s vice president said, “After reviewing the study, we have decided to voluntarily withdraw unrefrigerated caramel apples from our stores. While we believe the potential health risk is minimal, we are acting out of an abundance of caution on behalf of our customers.”

The Kroger family of stores has discontinued the sales of these products, taking them down from all stores and withdrawing them from distributors. Dr. Pruett added that “the company is open to carrying these products again in the future and will work with suppliers to reduce the risk of bacterial growth.”
