Lockup Gurgaon Is Changing The Definition Of Prison Food & We Aren’t Complaining

on

Budding in the ever-growing Gurgaon foodscape in Lockup, a theme-based restaurant that draws inspo from – wait for it – prisons. That’s right, right from the interiors to the ambiance the restaurant spells out J-A-I-L. But the one thing that’s completely different at this Lockup was the food. And we have good reason to sell this prison and its food to you.

The Space

Sticking to its dramatic prison theme, the restaurant doesn’t disappoint with its décor. Done up in dark murky colors, the walls replicate crumbling prison cells while the space is punctuated with the occasional iron bars that add a little extra drama to it all. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can even enjoy your meal in an isolated prison cell that’ll hold just your table.

To complement the set-up, the rusty metal chairs and tables, Bollywood-esque overhead lamps along with aluminum plates, steel glasses, and chipped cutlery are in place. Did we mention the life-sized statue that greeted us at the staircase? Yep, they’ve got the theme on point, all right.

The Food

Lockup’s menu is vast. And by vast we mean Mughlai chicken tikka to Lebanese wrap vast. The spread features an array of North Indian, Chinese, Mediterranean, Italian, and American grubs complete with a selection of in-house mocktails and desserts. So, it is safe to say that there is something for everyone at the restaurant.

We had the chance to sample some of Lockup’s interesting food offerings and we came home with a stuffed belly and a more than satiated hunger. We tried the Chicken Nachos, which were a tepid start to the meal with store-bought nachos topped with a cold mix of chicken and fresh salsa. In contrast to the nachos, the Jalapeno Poppers surprised us plenty with its crunchy exterior and mildly-spice molten cheese interior.

We paired our starters with two truly refreshing drinks – the Hara Aam Zyada and the Nutty Buddy. While the former was a spicy take on the traditional Indian aam panna the latter was an out and out firangi snickers shake. Needless to say, we loved both!

Next up was our main course that saw a cheesy and supremely meaty Meat Feast Pizza, a wholesome Lamb Wrap, a Chicken Burra Kebab, and an assorted kebab platter. The meat was cooked through and seemed fairly fresh to taste. The pizza made us happy with generous amounts of mozzarella, barbecue chicken, chicken salami, and chicken sausage. Loaded with delish masalas, the chicken burra too was a palate-pleaser. The kebab platter, which came bearing a variety of tikkas, was a one-way ticket to meat heaven. The lamb wrap, on the other hand, was nothing groundbreaking but we still ate through half of it because of the sheer freshness of the preparation.

In conclusion, Lockup is a great spot to visit if you’re looking for an Instagram friendly space that serves sumptuous portions for prices that won’t burn a hole in your pocket. And while the menu is expansive and international, the restaurant’s forte according to us lies closer to home in its North Indian and Chinese dishes.
