on

Nestle India has turned its focus on health-based products in an attempt to gain traction in the emerging health conscious market in India. The company currently has two proprietary products in the market and intends to increase its offerings when it receives clearance on foods for special medical purposes, according to Economic Times.

Health Sciences In India

Nestle’s Health Sciences business is one of the leading health-based product manufactures in the old. Although the business is still in its early stages in India, the global conglomerate plans to develop a strong market in the country. Speaking to Economic Times about the company’s plans, Nestle India CMD Suresh Narayanan said “We have Nestle Health Science business, which is nascent in the country. Globally, Nestle is looking at Health Sciences in a big way. The new frontier is not just medicines but food.

Health Products

Nestle currently sells two products – ‘Resource’ and ‘Peptamen’ – through partnership with doctors and leading hospitals in the country. These products aim to give the consumer a balance of “energy, protein and nutrition”. The company plans to expand its portfolio when the necessary regulations are met. “At present the business is very very small (in India). Growth, here, can be exponential. We are waiting for some of the regulatory framework to be cleared,” added Narayanan. The company is targeting a launch for its new food product for Alzheimer’s patients which could potentially help with the debilitating disease.

New Launches

The company also has plans to bring its International brand of products to India but are cautious about the relevancy of the products in this country. “Globally, we have quite a few business which we don’t have in India like pet care and Nespresso. Question is, what is relevant for Indian market that we can bring to the table,” added Narayanan. Nestle’s health based products is one of brands in its portfolio which could add value to the company’s bottom line. “We have expertise in the whole area of nutrition and health. For example, in issues relating to diabetes and cardiovascular health. This country has 60 million diabetics and cardiovascular patients. Nutrition plays a big role in this,” said Narayanan.
