The Godfather Clemenza’s Tomato Meatball Sausage Sauce Recipe
When they’re not being badass members of the mafia, the characters in The Godfather can be found in the kitchen, whipping up a storm. After all they are Italians, and they do have a knack for cooking. Popular food moments in The Godfather include the one where the Don says “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.” and the one where Michael is taught to make tomato meatball sausage sauce.
Clemenza’s Tomato Sausage Sauce
Before he becomes heavily involved in the mob business Michael is pulled to the stove by Clemenza, who teaches him how to make tomato sauce with sausage and meatballs saying “you might have to cook for twenty guys one day.” Clemenza gives Michael a bunch of detailed instructions:

Using these instructions, we’re sharing a recipe for Clemenza’s meatball and sausage spaghetti sauce. Serve it with spaghetti for lunch or dinner.

- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 3 garlic cloves chopped
- 2 cans tomatoes
- 2 cans tomato paste
- 3 Italian Sausages grilled and sliced
- 1 pound meatballs
- 3 tbps red wine
- 1/4 cup sugar
Ingredients

- Heat the oil and sauté the garlic.
- Add the tomatoes and tomato paste.
- Sauté for five minutes.
- Add the sausages and meatballs and stir.
- Add the red wine and the sugar.
- Allow the sauce to simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Serve over pasta and enjoy.
