Scientists Are Worried About The Plastics In Seafood

on

In the recent years, more and more people have been giving up red and possibly white meats in favour of seafood. They believe that fish is a healthier source of protein as it has less saturated fats and contains omega-3 fatty acids which are instrumental in preventing cardiovascular disease.

However, a recent study has raised the concern that seafood contains tiny particles of plastic which can accumulate in the human body.

The Dangers Of Micro plastics

Researchers from the University of Ghent in Belgium found that plastic pollution in the sea is ingested by fish, crabs, lobsters and other sea creatures. When humans eat fish, they also ingest micro plastics in the seafood; according to the researchers, people can be ingesting as many as 11,000 slivers of plastic each year.

These micro plastics are absorbed into the tissues and can accumulate over the years possibly leading to a health risk.

“Now we’ve established that they do enter our body and can stay there for quite a while, we do need to know the fate of the plastics,” lead researcher Dr. Colin Janssen told Sky News. “Where do they go? Are they encapsulated by tissue and forgotten about by the body, or are they causing inflammation or doing other things?” he questioned.

The researchers suggest that further research must be done on the possible effects of the plastic in our bodies.
