Six Stations In Chennai Will Be Opening Food Plazas For Southern Railway Passengers And Suburban Commuters
Six stations for the Southern Railway will be getting food plazas and IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) working on plans to widen the food options for passengers.
The plans include setting up the food plazas at the Trichy and Madurai stations first. And in fact, this past Saturday, the food plaza at the Trichy station was opened. The next phase includes setting up of food plazas at eastern and western ends of the Tambaram station, then Egmore station (at the entrance from Poonamalee High Road), Arakkonam and Tiruttani.
A senior railway official spoke about these food plazas and said, “The Tambaram and Egmore food plazas have been designed outside the ticketing zone. They will have entrances from outside the station so patrons will not be limited to people entering the stations.”
Since most of the South-bound train services originate and end in Tambaram, officials expect the food plaza to draw in a large number of customers. The Egmore station will also target metro rail commuters, while Arakkonam being a junction for trains from Chennai to Salem, Coimbatore, Kerala and Bengaluru also caters to many suburban commuters. These travellers will also benefit from the wider food options.
There have been many delays in the timely construction of these food plazas, but in the next few months, all the outlets should be open. The food plazas are to cater to passengers who are willing to pay the market rate for food products as opposed to the subsidised food from the railway caterers.
