Beef Ban In Maharashtra
Many communities and groups in Maharashtra had opposed the beef ban and many political parties have vouched for a complete ban on beef in the state says the report. The Supreme Court had issued a notice after hearing the petitions, one of which had said that buffaloes above 16 years of age are of no use to the farmers and they can earn money by selling them off. The petition further said that the beef ban has led to unemployment for lakhs of people and hence the buffaloes above the 16 years of age should be allowed to be slaughtered.
The report by NDTV further says that the Akhil Bhartiya Krishi Goseva Sangh has petitioned against the Bombay High Court’s decision to allow consumption of beef in the state. In 2016, the Bombay High Court had allowed the beef ban but had allowed consumption of beef being brought in by other states into Maharashtra. The regions that do not impose a ban on beef could sell the beef in the state and the people could consume it as well. The purchasers simply need to keep proof of purchase so that they can prove themselves innocent in case challenged for breaking the law.
