Supreme Court Puts A Stay On High Court Hearing Of Taking Food Inside Movie Theatres

The debate on whether food should be allowed inside movie theatres and multiplexes has taken a turn as the Supreme Court puts a stay on the PIL hearing by the Bombay High Court reports the Times of India. A bench comprising of Justice Rohinton Nariman and Justice Indu Malhotra came put the stay after hearing a transfer plea from the Multiplex Association of India.

Outside Food In Multiplexes

The Multiplex association had pleaded the Supreme Court by saying that it heard all the petitions including the one by Jainendra Baxi together that says that movie-goers should bring their own food to the theatres and multiplexes. The transfer petition has also led the Supreme Court to put a stay of the petition filed by Surendra Pal Singh against the state of Madhya Pradesh. Similarly, in July the apex court had also put a stay on the directive issued by the high court of Jammu and Kashmir that allowed patrons to carry food and water inside movie theatres.

Currently, the Bombay High Court had questioned cinema and multiplex owners on why the patrons cannot carry their own food and water when they can do so in an airplane. The state replied by saying that though there is no rule forbidding them to do so, “the licensing authority is competent to put conditions and restrictions on establishment owners to ensure the safety and security of viewers”.
