Why Did This UK Couple Serve Their Guests Waste Food At Their Wedding?

on

Remember when UN delegates got served a meal constructed out of food waste to highlight food insecurity? Well, it’s not just something that can be expected from world leaders; a wedding held in September in the UK did exactly the same thing.

Zoe Loughlin and her husband Charles Loughlin choose to have an ‘ethical wedding’. They decorated tables with candles in jam jars, had flowers in recycled bean cans and recycled sign boards. More impressively, a major part of their wedding feast was prepared by FoodCyle, which creates meals for those below the poverty line using supermarket discards.

Guests were served panzanella salad and Moroccan-style vegetables which were made using ingredients that had passed their best-by date and vegetables that were thrown out by supermarkets. “For the main course we had some beef which we bought from a pub but for the other two courses we were unaware of what we were going to get,” said Zoe to the Mirror.Co.Uk.

Most guests, the couple said, were impressed by both the quality of the food and the concept. In a society where the wedding industry generates a ton of waste in food, decorations and so forth it’s refreshing to see the steps this couple took to ensure they were remaining ethical.
