Beef and Barley stew made its appearance in A Clash of Kings
“Maybe they don’t have sheep and cattle, Bran thought. He commanded the serving men to bring them mutton chops and a slice off the aurochs and fill their trenchers with beef-and-barley stew. They seemed to like that well…”
Are you excited? We sure are. In preparation, we’re preparing a feast like never before. Why don’t you do the same? We’ve already shared recipes for mulled wine, lemon cakes and a tears of Lys cocktail with you; today we’re adding a recipe for delicious medieval honeyed chicken to your repertoire.
A good kidney pie is all about the ingredients. Flour, lard, water, eggs, milk – easy enough. But the meat? Peacetime or not, getting your hands on a good bottom round steak and calves’ kidneys is not easy. I mean, some people settle for plain old beef kidneys. Got no right to cook anything, them. Oh, and the gravy! Don’t get me started on the gravy. Very difficult to get right. See, a lot of people give up on the gravy. You cannot give up on the gravy. No gravy, no pie – Simple as that.
The Tears of Lys, therefore, have an immense significance and should feature in a Game of Thrones themed gathering. However, since we’re pretty sure you don’t want to poison your friends, the Tears of Lys recipe we’re sharing is not lethal, but is pretty darn potent.
Serve it at a cocktail party, a dinner party, a brunch; it works pretty much all the time.
Zesty lemon cake inspired by Sansa Stark.
Delicious mulled wine.
Serve this mulled wine, similar to what they drink in Westeros to get those conspiracy theories flowing.
After King Robert died, the boar which killed him was served at his funeral feast. According to Cersei, “it tasted like triumph”. Taste triumph yourself with this recipe.
At Margarey and Joffery’s wedding, Jofferey cuts through a pigeon pie with his new sword. Later, Lollys tells Bronn she wants a pigeon pie at their wedding. While that wedding never happened, you can make a faux pigeon pie yourself using duck.
In ‘A Game of Thrones’, in the Hand’s tourney feast, attendees dine on “A thick soup of barley and venison; salads of sweetgrass and spinach and plums sprinkled with crushed nuts; snails in honey and garlic; sweetbreads and pigeon pie, baked apples fragrant with cinnamon, and lemon cakes frosted in sugar.” Today, we’re teaching you to make a delicious baked apple dessert, inspired by this feast.
It’s been a while since we’ve shared a Game of Thrones inspired recipe so we thought we’d break that pattern. Today, we turn focus to the first feast that Jon and his other brothers had at The Wall after joining the Night’s Watch. The meal was significant because it was had after they said their oaths which made them true brothers.
