7 Things You Can Do On An Individual Level For World Food Day
Today is World Food Day, a day of action against hunger, where communities and organisations around the world commit to revving up their action against food insecurity. World Food Day marks the creation of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, which undertakes massive programs to help hunger. However, individuals need not leave efforts up to big organisations. Here are a few things that you can do on an individual level to join the fight against hunger.
Educate Yourself
According to the World Food Programme statistics, approximately 1/9th of the world’s population does not have enough food to lead healthy lives. A majority of these are in Asia. Beef up your statistical knowledge by doing your research, and you’ll be more likely to understand the immensity of the problem and be more committed towards helping it. Start with visiting the World Food Program’s website.
Watch Documentaries
A variety of documentaries have been created to raise awareness and explore ways to help when it comes to food insecurity. Watch documentaries like ‘Thought For Food’, ‘We Feed The World’, and ‘A Place At The Table’ to help along your knowledge. A visual rendition of the problem will likely be more impactful.
Take Quizzes
Once you form the basis of your knowledge, take quizzes about the issue to make sure you have your facts right. Take the World Food Program hunger quiz. Once you’re done with that, head over to FreeRice.com and answer some simple questions; for every answer you get right, investors donate 10 grains of rice to the World Food Program.
Don’t Waste!
We were all told this as kids, and we’ll repeat it again today; don’t waste food! Only cook and buy as much produce as you need.
Shop At Local Markets
Instead of buying packaged food from massive food companies try visiting local markets instead. You’ll help support local communities and sustain livelihoods. You also may build relationships with the producers, which will help you better understand and appreciate where your food comes from.
Get Involved
There’s a multitude of ways you can get involved. Visit farms and try your hand at farming for the day, which will again help you better understand the value of food. Join a local NGO or donate to NGOs that work to eradicate hunger.
Document Your Experiences And Spread The Word
Use whatever creative skills you have; film making, photography, writing and so forth to document your experiences when it comes to understanding food and food insecurity. Spread the word on social media. You may inspire others!
