5 Weirdest Hangover Remedies From Around The World

on

It’s a Sunday afternoon and you are trying to get rid of that nasty hangover from the night of drinking. You could always try a local cure, but people living around the world go to great lengths to deal with the headaches and nausea associated with a bad case of hangovers.

Let’s look at a few strange methods employed by people from all parts of the world to ward away hangovers.

1. Mongolia – Pickled Sheep Eyeballs In Tomato Juice

We try best not to judge people for their “remedies”, but there is a line drawn somewhere and it probably starts and ends with this. Called the Mongolian Mary, a traditional hangover cure drink which dates back hundreds of years, it contains tomato juice and, as you can guess, pickled sheep eyeballs. The tomato juice supposedly helps the liver remove alcohol from your body. Why the pickled sheep eyeballs? You would have to ask the Mongolians.

2. Canada – Poutine

Now, this is more like it. Poutine is a traditional Canadian dish, french fries, topped with cheese curds and gravy. Canadians swear by poutine as the best hangover cure. Supposedly it helps in absorbing alcohol from your body. We don’t know whether it is a perfect hangover cure but it definitely is a perfect cure for a starter.

3. Australia – Ant Tea

Australians have been known for their natural hangover remedies and nothing says natural more than tea made from crushed ants. Be wary, these are not your regular ants that you find running around in your kitchen. These are a very specific type of green ants, which are grounded and added to tea to get rid of many ailments, including headaches and cold.

4. Japan – Umeboshi

Umeboshi is a pickled plum like fruit which is more sour than your lemons. It is a trusted hangover cure in Japan and also helps in digestion, liver function and prevention of nausea.

5. USA – Prairie Oyster

The land of good beers and great food, the US is known for its hard partying ways. Although there are several ways Americans get rid of the hangover after a weekend of partying, the Prairie Oyster is the most interesting one. It is a cocktail drink consisting of raw egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper and hot sauce. The name comes about due to the unbroken egg placed at the bottom of the glass, giving it a Oyster like texture.

Although there are several hangover “remedies” and natural cures, the best way to not wake up with side splitting headaches and nausea is to properly hydrate yourself over the course of your drinking session. If you do wake up with bad case of hangover, try having a hearty breakfast, especially eggs to tone down the symptoms of hangovers.
